Welcome back, K-drama Insiders! 💫

We have a lot to catch up on. I was away visiting family last week, so I wasn’t able to get the weekly newsletter out.

In the two weeks we’ve been apart, I’ve watched a lot! Isn’t that what long plane rides are for?

It seems I’m on a rom-com roll. I finished Our Sticky Love and Dream to You, and started My Bias, My Boss and My ID Is Gangnam Beauty. Since My Bias, My Boss is being released weekly, My ID Is Gangnam Beauty has become my in-between watch.

It seems that I say this about almost every K-drama I watch, but I really loved Our Sticky Love. It was much better than my Overboard analogy made it sound. The story had a thriller-like plot filled with mystery, suspense, and a twist toward the end that I never saw coming. Even more interesting, only one character and the viewers knew the full truth. The main characters never found out, which I liked because it kept things much less messy than they could have been. I won’t spoil it, though! Jung Hae-in always delivers, and Ha Young was fun to watch too.

Dream to You was another sweet rom-com, this time about first love and two aspiring teenage filmmakers who separate bitterly after high school. Fifteen years later, they reconnect for a chance to make both of their dreams come true. I really enjoyed the onscreen chemistry between Hwang In-youp and Lee Hyeri.

I’m only five episodes into My Bias, My Boss. This workplace romance involves a corporate love triangle, and I’m already wondering which male lead will end up as the second lead. I’m rooting for one of them right now, but I genuinely can’t tell how it will play out. Will I end up with second lead syndrome? Usually, I can tell right away!

For my in-between watch, I’m three episodes into My ID Is Gangnam Beauty, starring Cha Eun-woo. So far, it has a plot similar to True Beauty, which also starred Cha Eun-woo. This time, the female lead turns to plastic surgery rather than makeup after years of being bullied for her appearance. That’s not really a spoiler. It’s the premise!

A Shop for Killers Season 2 held onto No. 1 for the third consecutive week in this week’s FUNdex TV-OTT drama buzz rankings. The next three positions also remained steady for the second week in a row, with Spooky in Love at No. 2, Our Sticky Love at No. 3, and A Bona Fide Killer at No. 4.

A Trap Called Desire was the only new drama to enter the TV-OTT Top 10, debuting at No. 9 with 3.46% Buzz Share. Its arrival pushed The Husband out of the rankings after that drama placed No. 7 the previous week.

On the global streaming side, K-dramas claimed three spots in Netflix’s Global Top 10 Non-English Shows for August 10 through August 16, 2026: Our Sticky Love, Spooky in Love, and Agent Kim Reactivated.

See You at Work Tomorrow! also remained in Prime Video’s worldwide ranking of non-English original series. The South Korean drama placed No. 5 for August 10 through August 16, down from No. 3 the previous week.

A new group of leading men is making its post-military return to K-dramas. Song Kang is returning in the upcoming music drama Four Hands, Two Sonatas, while Lee Do-hyun will lead the fantasy series Grand Galaxy Hotel. Ong Seong-wu has already returned to viewers in Spooky in Love.

Their closely watched comebacks highlight the unusual career interruption Korean actors face when completing mandatory military service, as well as the anticipation that builds around the projects they choose upon returning.

Cha Eun-woo considering new lead role in Bon Appétit spinoff
Cha Eun-woo is considering a lead role in Seorabeol Knife, a new drama set in the same universe as Bon Appétit, Your Majesty. His agency, Fantagio, confirmed that he received an offer and is reviewing the project.

Moon Sang-min and Shin Si-a: No Crushing Allowed
Netflix confirmed Moon Sang-min and Shin Si-a as the leads of No Crushing Allowed, with Lee Min-jae and Choi Hee-jin rounding out the main cast. The youth rom-com follows students at rival all-boys and all-girls high schools separated by a single wall, where anyone caught dating faces expulsion. Moon Sang-min and Shin Si-a play childhood friends and competing student council presidents whose rivalry begins to spark new feelings.

Lee Jung-shin: What a Boss Wants
CNBLUE’s Lee Jung-shin has joined Sung Hoon and Oh Se-young in the upcoming MBN romance What a Boss Wants. He will play a handsome, kindhearted pediatrician from a privileged family in a story about a chaebol boss with no sense of taste searching for the mysterious indie singer whose voice captured his attention. The drama is currently scheduled to premiere in November.

Doh Kyung-soo and Kim Do-yeon: We Are the Zombies
Doh Kyung-soo and Kim Do-yeon are in talks to lead We Are the Zombies, a new horror drama set inside the fictional Seoul Tower shopping center. They have been offered roles as two survivors who fail to escape an outbreak and must find a way to coexist with the zombies trapped inside.

Heo Nam-jun: Currency Reform
Heo Nam-jun is considering the lead role in Currency Reform, an upcoming SBS drama based on a Kakao webtoon. He would play a man struggling at the bottom of society who learns that the father he never knew has died, leaving him the chance to compete for an inheritance worth 1 trillion won.

Lee Jong-won: Men of the Harem
Lee Jong-won is in talks to join the fantasy romance Men of the Harem following Lee Soo-hyuk’s departure from the project. Based on a popular web novel and webtoon, the drama follows an empress who creates a royal harem of male consorts to protect her throne.

A Trap Called Desire (August 10 on KBS2, Kocowa, OnDemandKorea, Viu, Wavve): A revenge melodrama about a woman falsely accused of murder who sets out to expose the truth and reclaim her stolen life. Starring Jang Seo-hee and Jeon Hye-won, the KBS2 daily drama airs Monday through Friday.

OK, Let's Get Divorced (August 19 on KBS2, Kocowa, Viu): The KBS drama stars Lee Min-jung and Kim Ji-suk as a married couple who run a wedding-dress business but decide to end their own exhausting marriage. It premiered August 19 at 11 p.m. KST.

Mousetrap (August 28 on Netflix): A dark psychological thriller starring Sol Kyung-gu and Ryu Jun-yeol. Based on the webtoon Field Mouse and inspired by a Korean folktale about a rat assuming a person’s identity after eating their nail clippings, the story follows a reclusive novelist whose life is stolen by an unknown impostor. As everything begins to unravel, he reluctantly teams up with a former loan shark to track down the person responsible and reclaim his identity.

Four Hands, Two Sonatas (August 29 on tvN, TVING, Netflix): A coming-of-age music romance named after the piano technique “four hands,” where two musicians play a single piano together. Set at an arts high school, the drama follows friendship, rivalry, love, and artistic ambition as three young people grow into professional adult pianists.

Meaning: Have you eaten?

Literally, 밥 (bap) means rice, but it can also refer more generally to a meal. In Korea, asking “Have you eaten?” is often more than a question about food. It can be a warm way of checking on someone and showing that you care about their well-being.

In K-dramas and in real life in Korea, the phrase is often used as a greeting, much like “How are you?” It is an invitation to talk, but also a way of saying, I care about you.
