Welcome back, K-drama Insiders! 💫

It’s time to catch up on all things K-drama.

The jury is still out for me on Mr. Queen. It’s interesting enough that I want to see what happens, but it took nearly half the series for me to feel invested in the story or its lead characters. The storyline and the unusual “romance” felt a little flat to me until around episode 15 of 20. I’ve come this far, though, so I’m committed to seeing how it all turns out! I don’t think it will land among my all-time favorites—especially when it comes to historical dramas—but the finale could still change my mind.

It does, however, use one of my favorite K-drama time-travel devices: water. Instead of futuristic machines or scientific portals, K-drama characters tend to fall into lakes, rivers, wells, oceans, or swimming pools and wake up in another time, another body, or both. Water often represents rebirth, transformation, destiny, and the thin boundary between worlds. (Read more about this topic.)

Meanwhile, Agent Kim Reactivated drops Episodes 7 and 8 this week, and I’m really enjoying it—although last week ended on a disturbing note. The series has sparked plenty of online discussion about its darker psychological elements, so I’m hoping this week brings back a little more comic relief to balance things out.

After these two, I think I may need a surefire winner.

This week’s rankings brought another major reshuffle—but one drama remains firmly in control.

Agent Kim Reactivated held onto the No. 1 position and expanded its buzz share from 26.19% to 30.42%, giving it a commanding lead over the rest of the field. See You at Work Tomorrow! made one of the week’s biggest moves, climbing three places to No. 2, while Teach You a Lesson rose to No. 3.

The week’s most dramatic jump belonged to The East Palace, which surged from No. 10 to No. 4 as anticipation built around its July 17 premiere. Meanwhile, The Apartment Job and Dream to You entered the Top 10 for the first time.

Netflix remained the most represented individual platform with three dramas in this week’s rankings, while broadcast and cable networks continued to hold six of the Top 10 positions.

Beyond the weekly FUNdex rankings, Viki also released its June Top 5: Reborn Rookie, The Legend of Kitchen Soldier, Fifties Professionals, Love Class 3, and Filing for Love. The titles were presented in no particular order.

South Korean banks are turning to K-dramas and reality shows to connect with younger consumers—and the strategy is drawing millions of views.

KB Kookmin Bank recently launched the four-part YouTube drama K-Industry Begins, starring Kim Nam-gil as a bank manager who helps businesses and individuals navigate financial challenges. Each 15-minute episode blends a heartwarming client story with financial education and subtle promotion of the bank’s services. The first episode reportedly reached around 1.4 million views within its first few weeks.

Other financial institutions are joining the trend. Woori Card created its own workplace dating reality show, while KB Kookmin Bank previously released a short-form drama about a young couple facing the risks of jeonse rental fraud.

It’s another sign that K-drama-style storytelling is becoming a powerful way for Korean companies to make complex—or traditionally less exciting—topics feel more relatable and entertaining.

Dream to You (July 13 on Genie TV, Viki and Viu in select regions): Starring Hwang In-youp and Lee Hye-ri, a second-chance romantic comedy about a celebrated film director and a struggling reporter who once shared teenage dreams of making movies. When they reunite 15 years later, old feelings and buried ambitions resurface, giving them another chance at love and the lives they once imagined. Watch Trailer on Viki.

The East Palace (July 17 on Netflix): Starring Nam Joo-hyuk, Roh Yoon-seo, and Cho Seung-woo, The East Palace blends palace intrigue, supernatural mystery, and Korean shamanistic folklore. In a recent interview with The Korea Herald, director Choi Jung-kyu explained that the series draws heavily from traditional Korean mythology while showcasing the beauty of Korea’s royal palaces through elaborate period design and extensive visual effects.

Spooky in Love (July 18 on tvN and Netflix): An occult romance starring Park Eun-bin as a haunted hotel CEO and Yang Se-jong as a prosecutor terrified of ghosts. When a single touch causes him to see the dead too, the two are pulled into a chaotic mix of supernatural mystery, reluctant partnership, and unexpected romance.

A Shop for Killers Season 2 (July 22 on Disney+): Returning stars Lee Dong-wook and Kim Hye-jun reprise their roles in the highly anticipated second season of the action-thriller. As Ji-an is drawn deeper into the deadly world left behind by her uncle, she must confront powerful new enemies, unravel dangerous secrets, and fight to survive in a world where every encounter could be her last.

Love on the Menu (July 24 on KBS2 and Viki): A weekend family romance starring Ha Seok-jin and Hani as former lovers who reunite eight years after a painful breakup. As old wounds resurface, they must navigate family responsibilities, healing, and the possibility of a second chance at love.

Meaning: Your Majesty.

No matter which historical drama you watch, you will inevitably hear “Jeonha!”—usually shouted loudly, accompanied by frequent bowing and, quite often, tears and pleas for mercy. This wonderfully dramatic word means “Your Majesty,” and sageuks simply would not be the same without it!
