Welcome Back K-drama Insiders! 💫

I recently finished watching the finale of Twisted Tie, an office fantasy romance and BL (Boys' Love) K-drama! It was a short, five-episode drama on iQIYI and my very first BL drama!

I started watching it after being invited to the International Media Roundtable with the lead actors, Kim Dohyun and Ko Taewoon, two K-pop idols making their acting debuts! I was so excited to meet them and have the opportunity to ask a question! You can read all about the interview, the question I asked, and more in my recent article.

I've also been watching 100 Days of Deception with Kim You-jung and Jinyoung, Reborn Rich with Song Joong-ki, and Doctor X: Mafia in White with Kim Ji-won. Three very different dramas!

100 Days of Deception

100 Days of Deception started a little slowly for me, but by episode 2, this historical espionage romance had me completely hooked!

Kim You-jung is such a versatile actress. From a powerful corporate CEO in My Demon to a fun and mischievous employee in Backstreet Rookie, a terrifying sociopath in Dear X, and now a pickpocket turned spy in 1932 during the Japanese colonial period in Korea, she has proven herself capable of fully transforming into her roles.

100 Days of Deception is full of lies, secret identities, and high-stakes romance, where her character's survival depends on maintaining a dangerous deception for 100 days.

Reborn Rich

Reborn Rich is a fantasy revenge drama about a modern-day man, played by Song Joong-ki, who is murdered and awakens in the teenage body of the grandson of the chaebol family he once worked for, with all his memories intact.

He finds himself about 10 years before the Asian financial crisis and decides to take revenge on the family that destroyed his previous life, this time from within the family itself.

Doctor X: Mafia in White

I'm not very far into Doctor X: Mafia in White, but I already love Kim Ji-won's character!

This dark comedy medical drama follows a surgeon so skilled that she can call her own shots and negotiate her own contracts. As a temporary, mercenary doctor who arrives at hospitals desperate for help, she creates chaos by ignoring all the rules, saves every patient (so far!), and always clocks out precisely at 6 p.m., while the rest of the staff just stares in exasperation and awe at the same time.

I honestly love this premise and her character's guts! She has a past, though, and I think it’s about to get even more interesting.

🎬 A Decade Later: Dr. Romantic Stars Reunite in The Perfect Lie

Ten years after captivating audiences with their on-screen chemistry in Dr. Romantic (2016), Yoo Yeon-seok and Seo Hyeon-jin are reunited in MBC's psychological thriller The Perfect Lie!

This time, the two play a surgeon and an elementary school teacher whose seemingly ordinary first date takes a mysterious turn. When their accounts of what happened that night begin to contradict each other, questions arise about who's telling the truth.

At a recent press conference, Yoo Yeon-seok shared how much he enjoyed working with Seo Hyeon-jin again, noting that their familiarity made filming feel natural and exciting.

The drama also faces some formidable competition in the weekend ratings, including SBS's Doctor X: Mafia in White.

For fans of Dr. Romantic, it's a reunion a decade in the making!

🎬 Behind Korea's Drama Boom: The Challenges Facing Production Crews

K-dramas have become a global entertainment powerhouse, but the people working behind the cameras aren't always sharing in that success.

A recent report by The Korea Herald examines the challenging working conditions facing Korean television production crews, including long hours, inadequate rest, insecure contracts, and limited workplace protections.

According to a study of 237 crew members released by the Hanbit Media Labor Rights Center, workers averaged 54 hours and 23 minutes per week, exceeding Korea's standard 52-hour legal maximum. In 31% of recorded cases, workers had less than 11 hours of rest before returning to set.

While working conditions have improved over the past decade, particularly following the introduction of Korea's 52-hour workweek framework, experts say the industry's fragmented production structure and reliance on last-minute filming continue to create challenges.

The article is the first in a three-part series examining the structural issues behind the global success of Korean dramas, including working conditions and ownership of Korean intellectual property.
