Welcome back, K-drama Insiders! 💫

I can’t believe it’s September, and my watch list just keeps growing! There are so many new K-dramas coming out that it’s hard on this girl’s sleeping patterns. I just have to keep up!

With that said, what am I watching? Well, I’m still watching My Bias, My Boss, and it took an unexpected turn this week that, frankly, I hope ends up keeping me from that sneaky second lead syndrome. But I’m not quite sure that’s going to happen. I’m still firmly Team Chan.

I finished My ID Is Gangnam Beauty, and it was a sweet K-drama that didn’t disappoint, but it was your typical rom-com. So, if you’re looking for a steady, formulaic drama where you can pretty much predict where it’s going, this is it. And let’s be honest, sometimes you just need one of those predictable romances, especially after the ones that emotionally wreck you (talking about you, Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo).

I’m onto See You in My 19th Life, and I finally feel like this is a fresh storyline. It stars Shin Hye-sun as a woman who has reincarnated 19 times and remembers all of her past lives, and Ahn Bo-hyun as her first love. The premise is unique compared with what I’ve seen, and Shin Hye-sun is such a wonderful actress.

She’s one of those actors who truly morphs into her character. You get pulled in and really believe she is that person. I loved her in The Art of Sarah, for which she recently won Best Actress at the 5th Blue Dragon Series Awards, and I always enjoy watching her. So I’m looking forward to seeing how this one evolves.

🎯 What’s on our radar this week

🌟 How Did We Miss These?

With so many new K-dramas, casting announcements, and international productions in the works, every once in a while one manages to slip past our radar. This week, we found two.

💕 Love Virus
Jung Hae-in and Shin Se-kyung are teaming up for a new romantic comedy about a couple who have been together for nine years and decide, before getting married, to take a break and date other people. What could possibly go wrong? Love Virus is slated to premier on TVING come out in 2027.

🔪 KiDnap GAME
This international co-production involves South Korea, Japan, and Hong Kong, and stars Korea's Lee Joon-gi alongside Japan's Kentaro Sakaguchi. The thriller revolves around seven simultaneous kidnappings across seven Asian cities, including Seoul and Tokyo. The victims' loved ones are forced into a series of missions, with a terrifying catch: ultimately, only one kidnapped person can be saved. KiDnap GAME premieres on Fuji TV in October, with international distribution already planned in multiple markets.

We're still watching for where U.S. viewers will be able to see it.

Both are officially on our radar now. 👀

Did we miss something? If you've heard about an upcoming K-drama, casting announcement, or Korean star's international project that should be on our radar, let us know!

🔥 K-drama Weekly Buzz Rankings

This week, Four Hands, Two Sonatas debuted at No. 1 with 20.73% Buzz Share, while Lee Jun-young and Song Kang simultaneously took Nos. 1 and 2 in the performer rankings. Meanwhile, last week’s No. 1 drama, Spooky in Love, fell entirely off the charts after completing its run. Dream to You and Our Sticky Love also left the Top 10.

New Recruit 4: Sabotage jumped six spots to No. 2, and Mousetrap climbed four spots to No. 3. Together with Four Hands, Two Sonatas, those three accounted for 52.44% of all tracked drama buzz, leaving the top of the chart unusually concentrated.

A Love Other Than Yours entered at No. 8 ahead of its Sept. 12 premiere, while The Affair Was Just the Beginning re-entered at No. 10.

Even after dropping out of the buzz rankings, Spooky in Love remained the highest-ranking K-drama on Netflix globally, coming in at No. 3, followed by Our Sticky Love at No. 4 and Mousetrap at No. 5. Mousetrap was the week's strongest crossover between domestic Korean buzz and global Netflix viewing.

Beyond Netflix, See You at Work Tomorrow! continues to rank in the Top 10 among Prime Video's non-English originals, coming in at No. 7 this week, down two places.

🐝 Industry Buzz

🎥 What’s Next for the K-Drama Industry?

Rising production costs, fewer outlets commissioning scripted content and a rapidly changing streaming market are pushing Korea’s entertainment industry to look for new ways forward. In Cine21’s 2026 industry outlook, 51 entertainment leaders weighed in on the growing roles of short-form dramas, AI and international co-productions, as well as concerns about an increasingly concentrated streaming market.

The timing is particularly interesting as 2026 marks the final year of Netflix’s announced four-year, $2.5 billion investment commitment in Korean content. So, what could the next chapter look like?

🎬 Casting News

Materesa (working title) | Netflix
Netflix has confirmed Nana, Kim Dan and Jung Gun-joo for its upcoming mystery thriller Materesa (working title). Nana stars as Ma Teresa, a cold-blooded criminal psychologist and professor who investigates high-profile unsolved murder cases, alongside Kim Dan as her assistant Park Seol and Jung Gun-joo as her longtime friend and prosecutor Yoo A-ram. The series is directed by Jang Young-woo (Queen of Tears, Bulgasal: Immortal Souls) and written by Kwon So-ra and Seo Jea-won (The East Palace).

Siren | Kim Ji-woong
On Sept. 4, Nest Management confirmed that ZEROBASEONE's Kim Ji-woong was cast as the lead in Siren playing a third-generation conglomerate heir who joins the policy academy and partners with a top detective to investigate cases. Siren is being developed as a multi-format project with film, mid-form and short-form content. Filming is expected to start once the remaining main cast is finalized.

My Troika | Yoo Yeon-seok & Cha Joo-young
Yoo Yeon-seok and Cha Joo-young have been confirmed to star in the upcoming time-slip romance My Troika. The drama follows a former fencing athlete who now works in VIP protection and a top actress from the 1970s who suddenly finds herself 50 years in the future. The series is written by Choi Ah-il, who also wrote Mr. Queen.

Lee Jong-suk Steps Away from Iseop’s Romance
Lee Jong-suk will no longer star in the upcoming drama Iseop’s Romance. His agency, ACE Factory, confirmed on Sept. 3 that the actor has stepped away from the project due to changes in the production and filming schedule that conflicted with his future commitments. Lee Jong-suk had been involved with the project since its planning stages. A replacement lead has not yet been announced.

More Casting Possible for Solo Leveling
Sung Joon and Kim Si-ah are reportedly being considered for Netflix’s upcoming live-action adaptation of Solo Leveling, joining previously confirmed lead Byeon Woo-seok. However, neither casting is confirmed. Following reports on Sept. 3, representatives for both actors said that nothing had been finalized. We’ll keep an eye out for an official announcement.
