Hi K-drama Insider 💫

Since they are being released excruciatingly slowly, ahem, I mean weekly, I’m still watching My Royal Nemesis and Sold Out on You on Netflix.

To fill the gaps between episodes, I also started WONDERfools (2026), which is fully released and only 8 episodes. I’m already on episode 5, and I have to say, I’m pleasantly surprised by how fun and unique it is so far.

It’s a superhero-comedy K-drama set during the Y2K panic in 1999, following three unlikely misfits who develop messy superpowers after a staged kidnapping goes wrong. Add in a mysterious civil servant played by Cha Eun-woo, a hometown conspiracy, and a lot of chaotic comedy, and it has turned into a much more entertaining watch than I expected.

📈 Top Trending Shows in South Korea

For the week of May 11 to May 17, My Royal Nemesis held the No. 1 spot on Netflix Korea for the second week in a row, followed by The WONDERfools, We Are All Trying Here, and If Wishes Could Kill.

Sold Out on You dropped to No. 5 after four weeks in the Top 10, but its messy, emotionally guarded couple dynamics are still keeping viewers invested. Soompi recently highlighted three relationship dynamics stealing fans’ hearts, and honestly… I get it.

Filing for Love also continues to perform strongly on Rakuten Viki’s global weekly charts, while The Legend of Kitchen Soldier and The Scarecrow both reached new personal best ratings of 7.9% nationwide in South Korea.

🎬 Micro-dramas Gaining Traction

Micro-dramas, also called “vertical stories,” are becoming a major force in global entertainment, with short smartphone-first episodes gaining serious traction in Korea, China, the U.S., and beyond. What’s especially interesting is how this format leans into emotional escalation, female-driven storytelling, and fast-paced engagement, which may make it a natural extension of the K-drama ecosystem.

👑 Perfect Crown Controversy

MBC’s Perfect Crown found itself at the center of online debate this week after viewers and historians criticized aspects of the drama’s royal symbolism and historical details during its final episodes. The production team, along with lead actors IU and Byeon Woo-seok, later issued public apologies, acknowledging concerns surrounding historical accuracy and cultural sensitivity.

The discussion has sparked broader conversations in Korea about historical representation, monarchy themes in modern K-dramas, and the growing global visibility of Korean historical content through streaming platforms.

🧠K-drama Word of the Week

어떡해! (eotteokhae!)

A phrase you’ll hear constantly in K-dramas when characters panic, stress out, or find themselves in complete emotional chaos. Depending on the scene, it can mean:
“What do I do?!”
“Oh no!”
“How could this happen?!”

Basically… the emotional state of all of us waiting weekly for new episodes. 😅
